Eyelid correction FAQ

Question: Can an eyelid correction be done under local anaestetic ?

Dr.Aslani: Preferably yes,and it is my preferred proceeding.Of course it can be done under general anestesia if a patient requires, or under a combination of local with general anestesia.

Question: Do I have to be afraid that I might not be able to close my eyes after the operation ?

Dr.Aslani: Overresection of skin, with belowmentioned consequences is a possible complication. In all honesty, this is very rare and a result of poor excecution of the operation what to my experience is much more freqeunt is patients objecting underresection , which means that the object that more skin on the upper eyelids ought to have been removed. Whe consulting a patient, it is important for me to establish that whilst naturally aiming for a perfect result, preservation of function has to be kept in mind primarily. It is natural that skin gives in a little bit over time after a blepharoplasty and sometimes patient even with very good results want more removed after about a year.

Question: What recovery time can I expect ?

Dr.Aslani: Blepharoplasty (eyelid correction) is a day case operation which does not involve any major recovery periods. However, bruising is anticipated and subject to individual predisposition. You may or may not have it.Bruising after a blepharoplasty normally prevails for roughly a week.

Question: What are the most freqent complications ?

Dr.Aslani:Conjuncitivitis and excess tearing. To my experience they tend to be temporary by nature. Regarding patient expectation, some tend to misunderstand that a blepharoplasty (an eyelid lift) is not a brow lift, and has nothing to do with altering the eyebrows.

Question: Is a blepharoplasty painful ?

Dr.Aslani: Not normally. Bear in mind that pain is an individual experience, but analgesia consumption after the operation is normally very low.

Question: How long do results last ?

Dr.Aslani: This is impossible to say for me. I guess about 10 years , but that depends on lifestyle and more importantly genetics.

Question: Can an eyelid lift be combined with a facelift ?

Dr.Aslani: It is absolutely, and in some, but not all cases I do actually advise to do so.

Question: I am scared about droopy eyelids, how often does that happen ?

Dr.Aslani:That is a problem of lower eyelid blepharoplasty. Overresection of skin can lead or muscle damage and therewith to downward traction of the eyelid. To avoid this, I regard it as mandatory to abstain from skin resection (or only a minimal one).I am furthermore inclined to put internal sutures lifting the lower eyelid margin to the orbital rim, a so-called canthopexy suture, to prevent this from happening.

Question: I am scared that my eyes look hollow after the operation ?

Dr.Aslani: This is,yet again, a problem of overresection, in this case overresection of fat from behind the orbital septum.I do not just resect the fat, but use at least part of it and redrape it over the orbital rim to smoothen the contour. This generally contributes to a much fuller and more youthful look of the face.
