Gynaeccomastia – Male Chest Reduction
Results
There are many reasons why a man develops prominent breasts (increase in glandular tissue): medication, hormone disorders, urological illnesses or for reasons unknown. In many cases nobody knows why it happens. Removing excess tissue can ensure a permanent solution to the problem and enables men to take part in sports once again and have a better choice of clothing.
The aim of the operation is to achieve a naturally formed male breast with well-proportioned nipples without being inverted, which can often develop through an overcorrection. The successful removal of excess tissue and fat means that the patient feels confident once again and improves his self-image.
Occasionally it is necessary for the surgeon to firm the skin at the same time, which must be repeated in extreme cases.
The Operation
An incision is made at the bottom of the nipple, which will minimise scarring. The operation is carried out under a general anaesthetic. The breast tissue is separated from the skin and most of it is removed. Most of the time, it is also necessary for the surgeon to carry out liposuction around the edges, in order to give a smooth appearance. After the operation drains are inserted into the breasts, so that any blood and ichor can be drained off. These drains can be removed after 1 to 2 days. A padded dressing should be worn for 1 week, following this you should wear a pressure garment – this will help the skin to settle and reduce swelling.
What a patient should know?
The removal of breast tissue is an operation which has few complications with a high level of patient satisfaction. However, because the breast tissue has been separated from the skin, it is possible that the blood circulation to the nipple is disturbed. Sensation of the nipple can also be reduced for a short period of time or they can be painful to touch. These changes fade/die away quite quickly in most cases; however permanent damage to the nerve of the nipple is a possibility. You should not take part in sports for at least 4 weeks.
After this period of rest, most men undergo a transformation in their self-confidence (they no longer have to feel ashamed of their protruding breasts).
