Whether the breasts are too small or too big, every woman wants breasts which are in proportion with her body. The Operation
The operation can be carried out under general anaesthetic or using a local anaesthetic. There are many different ways of inserting the silicone implants: through the armpits, around nipple or from beneath the breast.
An incision is made and the surgeon dissects the breast muscle, creating a pocket, into which the implant is inserted. The muscle is then separated from the breast tissue and the implant is then placed under the muscle. Finally drainage tubes are inserted into the breast, preventing the accumulation of blood and ichor in the breast. These will be removed after 1 to 2 days. Following the operation the different layers of the breast are closed and the wounds are stitched together subtly. The breast will then be supported using a dressing.
A sports bra should be worn for 6 weeks day and night after the operation and bodily strain should be avoided for at least 4 weeks.
What a patient should know?
Placing the implant under the muscle instead of over the muscle has many advantages, however the procedure of separating the muscle from the tissue is very painful and uncomfortable (similar to very sore muscles after tough sport) and this pain/discomfort could remain for a few days after the operation. Sport should definitely be avoided for 6 weeks. Antibiotics should also be taken for one week following the surgery.
The sensation of the nipples can be changed after the operation but this should only be temporary.
It is normal for the body to form a wall of scar tissue around all foreign bodies (capsular contracture). In the case of a breast enlargement it depends on how strongly the body rejects the implant. During extreme capsular contracture (which is very rare with modern implants and correct positioning/techniques used by the surgeon) the breast can become very hard, the implant can become displaced and a patient can even suffer from pain. In such cases, a second operation is necessary. It also natural for an infection to occur because of the foreign body; however this can be relieved by taking antibiotics.
